What is a Microgrid?

A microgrid is a localized energy system that can generate, manage, store and distribute power using a combination of resources including solar, wind, natural gas, hydrogen, geothermal, batteries, and other technologies.

Microgrids can serve campuses, hospitals, communities, military installations, industrial facilities, and other critical infrastructure. They can operate alongside the larger electric grid, disconnect and operate independently in “island mode,” and can also send power back to the grid during a peak demand event.

Microgrids Level 1: Foundations introduces participants to the technologies, applications, and systems that make microgrids possible, and their growing role in creating a more resilient, distributed, and sustainable energy infrastructure.
